Privacy policy

MovieYell is a free website run by WebTastic Webdesign in the Netherlands. This page says what MovieYell keeps about you, what it is used for, who else receives some of it, and how to have it removed. Questions: info@movieyell.com.

What we keep

  • Your account: your email address and the name you give.
  • What you do here: your votes and when you saw a film, your reviews, comments and likes, who you watched a film with and on what screen or at which cinema, your friends and friend requests, the films you marked as watched, your year lists and your settings.
  • IMDb, if you linked it: your IMDb user code, and the ratings in your public IMDb ratings list, which we copy as your votes.
  • Foursquare, if you connect it: your Foursquare id, the access key Foursquare gives us, and your check-ins at cinemas.
  • Signing in: for a passkey, its public key, the name you gave it and when it was last used (the private key never leaves your device). For an email sign-in link, a code that works once and for at most a week, with the time and IP address of the request, to stop abuse.
  • Push notifications, if you turn them on: the address your browser gives us to deliver them.
  • Visits: when you last visited, how often you visit, and the IP address of your last visit. Like any web server, ours logs each request (IP address, browser, page and time).

What it is used for

To run MovieYell for you: to show your votes and reviews to your friends, keep you signed in, and send you sign-in links and the notifications you asked for. We send no newsletters or offers, show no advertising, and never sell, rent or lend your data to anyone.

Who sees it on MovieYell

Your votes, reviews, year lists and cinema check-ins are shown to your friends: in their news feed, on the movie pages, in the statistics and on the leaderboard. A comment you write under a friend's vote is seen by everyone who can see that vote. Members can find you by your name or email address to send you a friend request. Other members do not see your email address.

Other services

  • Google Analytics (Google), only if you allow it when we ask: counts visits so we can improve the site: the pages, your device and your approximate location, and for members their MovieYell account number (not your name or email address). It sets its own cookies.
  • Gravatar (Automattic): your profile picture comes from Gravatar, which your browser asks for with a code made from your email address (an MD5 hash).
  • The Movie Database (TMDb): posters and film photos load from TMDb, which sees your IP address.
  • YouTube (Google): a film page with a video loads YouTube's privacy-enhanced player (youtube-nocookie.com), which sees your IP address.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google): delivers push notifications, if you turn them on.
  • Foursquare: only if you connect your account, to read your check-ins.
  • Sentry: when something on the site breaks, an error report with the page address and your browser goes to Sentry, so we can fix it.
  • Our servers are at Hetzner in Germany. Email is sent from our own server.

Cookies

  • PHPSESSID keeps you signed in during a visit, and goes when you close your browser.
  • tc and uid keep you signed in on this browser until you sign out (tc for up to ten years, uid for a year).
  • _ga and _ga_KLQKSLKTN4 are Google Analytics' own, only if you allow it, for up to two years.

There are no advertising cookies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser; without the first three you cannot stay signed in.

How long we keep it

Everything about your account stays until you delete your account. The web server's request logs are deleted after at most 15 weeks.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you may ask what we keep about you, and have it corrected or deleted, or object to how we use it: email info@movieyell.com. You can download your votes as a file at any time ("Export your data" in the settings). If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl).

Deleting your account

Email info@movieyell.com from your account's address. We delete your account and everything linked to it within two business days, and email you to confirm that all your data is gone.
